Exercise physiology for Parkinson’s disease

Combined Wellness Solutions provides exercise physiology for people living with Parkinson’s disease across the Gold Coast and Ipswich.

Our Exercise Physiologists support clients from our Nerang clinic on the Gold Coast and our Ipswich clinic, with home visits, hydrotherapy and community-based support available where appropriate.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that can affect movement, balance, coordination, posture, walking, strength, speech, mood, fatigue and confidence.

For many people living with Parkinson’s disease, exercise plays an important role in maintaining physical capacity, supporting mobility and improving confidence with movement.

At Combined Wellness Solutions, exercise programs are adapted to the person’s goals, stage of Parkinson’s, medication timing, fatigue levels, mobility, balance, confidence and support needs.

Common movement changes in Parkinson’s disease

People living with Parkinson’s disease may experience changes such as slower movement, stiffness, tremor, reduced arm swing, shuffling steps, freezing of gait, reduced balance, reduced walking confidence, changes in posture, fatigue and difficulty starting or stopping movement.

These changes can affect daily activities, independence, confidence and participation in the community.

Each person’s symptoms and goals are different, which is why exercise physiology should be individualised.

How exercise physiology can help

Exercise physiology for Parkinson’s disease may support strength, balance, walking confidence, mobility, posture, cardiovascular fitness, coordination and functional movement for daily tasks.

The aim is to help the person move with more confidence and support their ability to participate in everyday life.

Depending on the person’s goals, sessions may focus on:

  • Strength and conditioning
  • Balance and falls prevention
  • Walking and gait confidence
  • Mobility and flexibility
  • Postural control
  • Coordination and movement amplitude
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Functional movement for daily tasks
  • Confidence with exercise
  • Maintenance of physical capacity over time

Parkinson’s exercise sessions at CWS

Exercise sessions are tailored to the person’s goals and current capacity.

Sessions may include strength training, balance and coordination exercises, walking practice, large-amplitude movement practice, functional movement training, cardiovascular exercise, mobility work, postural control and dual-task activities where appropriate.

Programs are adjusted around how the person presents on the day. This may include considering medication timing, fatigue, freezing episodes, balance confidence, cognition, motivation and support needs.

Neurological rehabilitation for Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease can affect more than fitness. It can impact confidence, walking, independence, participation and quality of life.

Neurological rehabilitation through exercise physiology focuses on helping clients build or maintain movement capacity in a way that is practical and meaningful.

For some clients, the goal may be walking more confidently. For others, it may be improving strength for transfers, reducing falls risk, building an exercise routine, maintaining independence or supporting social and community participation.
