Hydrotherapy in Gold Coast & Ipswich

Aquatic exercise physiology for disability, neurological conditions, injury, pain, reduced mobility
— supporting strength, movement and confidence in the water.

Hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise physiology

Combined Wellness Solutions provides hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise physiology for clients across the Gold Coast and Ipswich who may benefit from a lower-impact exercise environment.

Hydrotherapy can be helpful for people who find land-based exercise difficult due to pain, reduced mobility, fatigue, balance concerns, disability, neurological conditions or recovery after injury.

Our Exercise Physiologists use individualised water-based exercise programs to support strength, mobility, balance, cardiovascular fitness, confidence and functional capacity

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy, also known as aquatic therapy or water-based exercise, uses the properties of water to support movement and exercise.

The buoyancy of water can reduce the amount of body weight placed through the joints, which may make movement feel easier for some clients. The resistance of water can also be used to build strength, control, endurance and confidence in a supported environment.

At Combined Wellness Solutions, hydrotherapy is not a generic pool program. Each session is adapted to the person’s goals, condition, mobility, confidence in the water, fatigue levels and capacity on the day.

Who may benefit from hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy may be suitable for children, teenagers or adults who need a lower-impact or more supportive environment to exercise.

This may include people living with:

  • Disability or complex support needs
  • Neurological conditions
  • Neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Reduced mobility
  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fatigue or deconditioning
  • Balance concerns or falls risk
  • Injury recovery
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation, where medically appropriate
  • Walking or gait difficulties
  • Reduced confidence with land-based exercise

Hydrotherapy may also be helpful for clients who are working toward clinic-based exercise, community participation or improved confidence with movement.

Hydrotherapy for neurological conditions and disability

Water-based exercise may be useful for people living with neurological conditions or disability because it can provide support while still allowing the body to work against resistance.

Hydrotherapy may support goals such as improving strength, balance, coordination, walking confidence, posture, endurance and movement control.

This may include people living with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, functional neurological disorder or other neurological and neurodevelopmental presentations.

The aim is to help the person move more confidently, safely and meaningfully within an environment that suits their needs.

NDIS hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise physiology

Combined Wellness Solutions is an NDIS registered provider.

We provide hydrotherapy for NDIS participants where water-based exercise is suitable for their goals, support needs and functional capacity.

Hydrotherapy may support NDIS goals such as:

  • Improving strength and endurance
  • Building confidence with movement
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Supporting mobility and walking capacity
  • Reducing the impact of deconditioning
  • Supporting safe participation in exercise
  • Maintaining function with disability or neurological conditions
  • Improving participation in health, recreation or community activities

We can also work with families, support workers, support coordinators and care teams to make sure the program is practical and goal-focused.

What can a hydrotherapy session include?

Each hydrotherapy session is tailored to the client’s goals, confidence in the water and current capacity.

A session may include:

  • Water-based strength exercises
  • Balance and coordination activities
  • Walking or gait practice in water
  • Mobility and flexibility exercises
  • Cardiovascular conditioning
  • Postural control and stability work
  • Functional movement practice
  • Confidence-building in the water
  • Education around pacing, fatigue and safe participation

Clients do not need to be strong swimmers to participate in hydrotherapy. Sessions are focused on controlled therapeutic movement, not swimming performance

Main benefits of hydrotherapy

Lower-impact exercise support

The support of water may make it easier for some clients to move, exercise and build confidence when land-based exercise feels difficult due to pain, weakness, fatigue or reduced mobility.

Strength, balance and mobility

Water provides natural resistance that can be used to support strength, balance, coordination, walking confidence and functional movement.

Confidence with movement

Hydrotherapy may help clients practise movement in a supportive environment, especially if they feel nervous, unsteady or limited during land-based exercise.

Individualised exercise prescription

Each session is adapted to the person’s condition, goals, fatigue levels, mobility, confidence and support needs.
