The problem with resting

When something hurts, the instinct is to protect it. But with chronic pain, arthritis and most injuries, extended rest quietly makes things worse: muscles weaken, joints stiffen, confidence shrinks, and the nervous system becomes more protective, and more painful.

Graded exercise reverses that spiral. Our accredited exercise physiologists find the amount of movement your body can handle today, then expand it week by week until the things that hurt become the things you do easily.

What we treat

  • Chronic and persistent pain, back, neck, shoulders, knees, combining graded activity with practical pain education
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, strength programs that protect joints and reduce pain
  • Injury rehabilitation, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries progressed from early loading to full function
  • Post-surgical recovery, joint replacements, spinal surgery, shoulder reconstructions, following your surgeon’s protocol
  • Osteoporosis, safe bone-loading exercise and falls prevention
  • Workplace injuries, full WorkCover return-to-work programs

Your rehab, staged and measurable

  1. Assessment. Your history, imaging and surgical notes, movement and strength testing, and the activities you want back.
  2. Baseline program. A starting dose your body accepts, often including hydrotherapyif land exercise flares symptoms.
  3. Progressive loading. Strength and capacity built steadily, with objective retesting so you can see the numbers climb.
  4. Return to life. Sport, work, gardening, grandkids — finished off with a plan to stay strong, like ourgroup classes.

Funding options

Musculoskeletal clients most often useMedicare care plans,WorkCover Queensland,DVA or private health extras. Older clients can use Home Care Packages, and people with permanent disability may qualify for theNDIS.

Musculoskeletal conditions FAQs

Won’t exercise make my pain worse?

Not when it is dosed correctly, and that is the whole skill. We start below your flare-up threshold and progress gradually, so your capacity rises while sensitivity falls. Decades of research show graded exercise is one of the most effective treatments for persistent pain; the trick is having a clinician who knows your starting dose.

When should I start rehab after surgery?

As soon as your surgeon clears you, most provide a protocol with clear stages. We work within your surgeon’s guidelines to rebuild range, strength and confidence, and we report progress back at your follow-ups. If you are pre-surgery, “prehab” conditioning measurably improves post-op outcomes too.

What about arthritis, should I rest my joints?

The opposite, gently. Strengthening the muscles around an arthritic joint reduces pain and improves function, exercise is a first-line treatment for osteoarthritis in every major clinical guideline. Warm-water hydrotherapy is a lovely place to start if land exercise is sore.

How is this different from seeing a physio?

Physios excel at diagnosing and treating the acute stage, often hands-on. Exercise physiologists take over where long-term change happens: progressive strength, conditioning and behaviour change over weeks and months. Many clients move from physio to us as rehab progresses, we often share care with local physios.

What funding can I use?

Medicare care plans (up to five rebated sessions a year), WorkCover for workplace injuries, DVA, NDIS where you have a plan, Home Care Packages for older clients, private health extras, or simply private booking with no referral.
